TUGUEGARAO CITY—The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) in Region 2 (Cagayan Valley) has rejected calls to immediately suspend the exploration activities of Woggle Corporation (WC) in Dupax del Norte, Nueva Vizcaya.
This decision was made after a thorough investigation conducted by the MGB Task Force, which found that the company had taken steps to address concerns and comply with regulations.
Investigation Findings
The investigation, conducted in response to calls from Nueva Vizcaya Lone District Rep. Timothy Joseph Cayton, the municipal and barangay local government units of Dupax del Norte, and anti-mining advocates, revealed that WC’s exploration activities primarily involved the rehabilitation of an old logging road, which did not result in significant land disturbances.
The investigation also found that no large-scale tree cutting. Allegations of large-scale tree cutting and trespassing were not substantiated, as memoranda of agreement were signed by both the company and the actual landowners and occupants to address concerns about trespassing.
It also noted that there was no presence of endangered species. There was no presence of endangered or threatened species in the exploration area.
The investigation also said that there was no pollution whatsoever. The exploration activities did not generate pollution, as they did not require heavy equipment, and did not significantly impact local flora and fauna.
It added that there were no substantial earth-moving operations. The project site has not undergone substantial earth-moving operations, and the exploration activity did not involve altering or redirecting existing water bodies.
MGB Region 2 stance
MGB Region 2 Director Mario Ancheta emphasized that while the immediate suspension of exploration activities is not warranted at this time, the bureau will closely monitor WC’s activities and may exercise its authority to issue a suspension order if non-compliance with recommendations or verified violations occur.
“Rest assured that the MGB Region 2 will remain vigilant and continue to monitor the company’s activities to ensure compliance with environmental and mining regulations,” Ancheta said.
Community Engagement
The MGB Task Force also reported that consultation meetings and project presentations with open forums were held in Bitnong on August 9, and in Oyao on August 15, this year, as well as with the Municipal Council of Dupax del Norte and the provincial board. These efforts demonstrate the company’s commitment to community engagement and transparency.
According to the MGB Region 2, its decision to deny calls for immediate suspension of WC’s exploration activities underscores the importance of thorough investigations and evidence-based decision-making in regulatory processes.
While concerns about the potential environmental impact of mining activities are valid, the MGB’s findings suggest that WC has taken steps to mitigate these risks.
Nevertheless, the bureau said that its commitment to ongoing monitoring and enforcement ensures that the company will be held accountable for any future infractions. TVJ
