TUGUEGARAO CITY (March 13, 2026)—Employees of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the Cagayan Valley Region have been directed to adopt energy conservation measures in their daily office operations to support environmental sustainability and resource efficiency.

In his message during the 1st Quarter Regional Management Conference, DENR Cagayan Valley Regional Executive Director Ismael Manaligod said the initiative aims to reduce energy and water consumption, lower the region’s carbon footprint, and generate savings that can be redirected to
priority environmental programs and projects.

“As environment workers, we must serve as models for others. We have to start within our own offices and demonstrate our seriousness in implementing energy conservation measures,” Director Manaligod emphasized.

He underscored that reducing the use of electricity, water, and other resources can significantly lessen carbon emissions released into the atmosphere, especially as the effects of climate change continue to be felt across the country.

Among the measures encouraged in DENR offices are switching off lights, computers, and other electrical equipment when not in use, as well as regulating the use of appliances to minimize unnecessary energy consumption.

Manaligod also called on key officials and personnel across the region to fully support the initiative, stressing that environmental protection must be reflected not only in policies but also in everyday practices.

“We aim to reduce electricity, water, and fuel consumption by at least 10 percent within one year by implementing energy-efficient operational schedules, optimized resource management systems, and responsible equipment usage,” he said.

As part of the region’s sustainability plan, the office will also discourage the conduct of meetings outside the office, particularly in costly hotels, and instead maximize the use of existing conference facilities within the regional office.

The office also plans to install rainwater harvesting systems in its facilities to collect water that can be used for cleaning, watering plants, and other non-potable purposes within office premises.

Another conserving mechanism is promoting paperless strategy to reduce excessive printing of documents.

This includes the implementation of a document management system that enables the online processing and routing of documents for faster and more efficient action on requests.

These initiatives are expected to improve operational efficiency while strengthening the delivery of services to the public. (PR)
