BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya (September 14, 2023)—The remote Yabbi Elementary School in the town of Dupax del Norte in the province of Nueva Vizcaya is now online through Project Resilient Education Information Infrastructure for the New Normal (Reiinn).
A project by the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DoST-ASTI), Reiinn aims to close the digital gap in far-flung areas recognizing the importance of internet access, especially for communication and education.
It was from September 7 to 8, 2023 when a team from DoST-ASTI and Data Lake visited Yabbi Elementary School to install Starlink and LokalFi in coordination with DoST in Nueva Vizcaya.
DoST explained that a stable connection even in remote areas is ensured by Starlink while the LokalFI helps establish local wireless networks.
Located in a remote and disadvantaged area, the Yabbi Elementary School lacks internet and proper infrastructure, making learning and teaching difficult.
According to DoST, this transformation will have a profound impact as pupils now have access to online lessons and educational resources, providing them with the same opportunities as their urban counterparts.
“Teachers can employ innovative teaching methods and collaborate with educators worldwide, enriching their students’ learning experiences,” it added.
It also noted that the teachers will be able to access exclusive educational content through the LokalFlix, MathPlus and Starbooks applications housed within the network, all these with the LokalFi network.
“This connectivity will hopefully extend beyond the school, benefiting the entire community,” DoST said, adding that this will also open up opportunities for local businesses, healthcare services and better communication with the outside world.
The DoST-Nueva Vizcaya said it will tap the local government unit of Dupax del Norte to help ensure its sustainability and continued improvement. LCD
